TLCA Executive Officer

Our President

Lyndley Chopping was a founding member of the Upper Derwent Valley Landcare Group and has been involved with the Landcare movement for over 15 years. Lyndley participated in the North Facing Slopes project developed on his property “Blackwood”. The project involved managing the north facing slopes differently from the south facing slopes. “What was required was a change in the fencing arrangements, once the fencing was done the grass grew better and as a direct result we stopped losing soil” he said.

“I have always believed in the concept and the people in the landcare movement” he said. “I think Landcare is as relevant today as it was when it started, all be it in a changed world. There is still a very important place for the volunteer landcare ethos and for opportunities for people to make a physical contribution” he said.

Our History

We are a non-government, independent association of Landcare, Coastcare, Bushcare, Waterwatch and ‘Friends of’ groups in Tasmania. Formed in 1994, our aim is to provide an independent, cohesive voice on behalf of the community Landcare movement, increasing our involvement in government decision-making.

Our mission is to work with Landcare groups, community organisations and government agencies to ensure that Tasmania can reverse land degradation and achieve ecologically sustainable management of our land and water resources. Download our committee contact details here.

Our Roles

The Association is determined to remain grassroots driven - driven by the needs, involvement of its members and Tasmania's Landcare issues.
Roles identified by TLCA members:

  • Strategic : Be involved in helping groups set the future direction of Landcare in Tasmania and contribute to setting State policies and priorities in natural resource management.
  • Support : Provide a support infrastructure for member groups, including administrative and facilitation assistance, state conference, training, workshops, field days, guest speakers and more.
  • Lobbying : Be an independent voice for the needs and desires of Landcare groups and represent them on government committees to have input into government policy on land and water management issues.
  • Networking : Facilitate the exchange of strategies, information, skills and resources. Develop and improve links between Tasmania's 300+ Landcare groups, community organisations and government agencies
  • Promotion: Promote the on-ground achievements of Landcare groups and individuals and further spread community awareness of Landcare practices and ethics.

Benefits of Joining

Join the Tasmanian Landcare Association and you can have a voice! The Association gives groups the opportunity to express their ideas, needs and concerns about Landcare.

In turn the Association presents a united voice to government and policy makers on such issues as funding, priorities, on-ground needs, state policies on land and water management, training, education and many other aspects of Landcare.

We will assist your group in a variety of administrative areas including: incorporation and insurance, constitutions, mail outs, field days, grants and resources, training programs, input into local and state land use plans and accessing government assistance.
As the TLCA grows, we aim to be in a position to both negotiate and participate with government in consultation processes. We believe the community should be more involved in developing government policy on Landcare.
With over 300 participating groups you can join today and become a part of strong and growing membership.
